Mustard Seed Resale Shop of Magnificat House Inc. Location & Year: Houston, TX - 2011 Size: 7,000 SF The MHI Training Center is located at the intersection of two major streets in Midtown Houston. The owner, Magnificat House Inc., is a faith based, non-profit, charitable organization, ministering to homeless, mentally ill, post offender men and women, helping them to restore themselves into society. The program consisted of a Resale shop, Woodworking shop, Art studio/ gallery, and facilities maintenance office. The client asked for a one level, low cost structure with open, flexible, low maintenance, bright spaces that could at times function with natural ventilation. The design is an L-shaped, 7,000 SF structure, sited close to the street intersection, taking advantage of the 10’ “urban” setback regulation of Midtown. Parking is located at the rear of the building. The Resale shop wing contains retail and support spaces under a “butterfly” roof and is flooded with natural light from clerestory windows. Typical storefront windows, shaded by metal canopies, expose the interior to the sidewalk. The workshop and art studio/gallery are perpendicular to the Resale shop, their five individual sloped roofs arranged flip-flop. Wide, glazed garage doors open and extend these spaces to the exterior. Commonplace materials were used with special attention to detailing. Steel columns are exposed at the exterior, with HardiPlank siding above a base of concrete veneer. The interiors have an open, lively look, with concrete floors and exposed steel columns supporting exposed, natural finish wood beams. HVAC ducts are exposed metal. Colors are white and gray with bright color accents. LEED Silver Magnificat Houses Story 2014
