Shade Structure and Planting Location & Year: Houston, TX - 2001 Lyons Village is a multi-use residential complex comprised of two brick buildings with a residual space between that houses four air conditioning units. The “Call for Civic Art” requested a shade structure for the site that could be designed and built within a modest budget. The design includes a blue eight-foot-long long tiled bench and other elements that create an outdoor room. Bamboo mitigates the overwhelming height of the brick walls, and a raised bed of grass doubles as seating. Dark gravel breaks up the scale of the space and completes the room’s furnishings.
